first meeting of parties interested in forming a Golden Retriever club in the
northern part of the state of was held April 9, 1990 at the Holiday Inn in
Appleton, Wisconsin. Forty-five people attended.
Northern Flyway was chosen as the club name at this meeting as Northern Flyway
is the name for the migratory path of Canadian geese, Whistler Swans and ducks
through this area.
The name was approved by the AKC on June 25, 1990. The geographic limits of the
club are - Appleton is the center of the area. West to Highway 51 (Stevens
Point), North to Highway 64 (Oconto) , East to Lake Michigan and South to Fond
du Lac.
AKC rules indicate that a club cannot apply for status until it has been in
existence for one year, so on July 2, 1991 AKC notified NFGRC that we were
eligible to hold BOB and trackings matches.
On December 19, 1991 NFGRC became a member club of GRCA.
Our first BOB match was held November 11, 1991 and our second was held May,
1993. Our AOA match was June 18, 1994.
In 1995 we were asked by GRCA to host the 1997 Central Regional Specialty, and
the rest is history.
